Land mammals such as the rare Arctic wolf and lemmings are isolated to the northern part of Greenland. Foxes live near inhabited areas, since these animals eat scraps discarded by humans. Nearly 10,000 musk oxen graze on green mountains near Kangerlussuaq. Along the west coast and east coast, herds of reindeer migrate to the interior parts of Greenland to find food. Polar bears hunt in the North, South and East.
Birds consist of the most diverse group of animals in Greenland. Birds, including ptarmigans and snow buntings, live mainly near the coasts. Small birds include sparrows, buntings and siskin. Greenland is also home to larger birds such as ravens, auks, owls and puffins.
Marine mammals create their own ecosystem in Greenland. Nearly 2 million seals live along the coasts. These animals provide food for orcas and polar bears. Migrating whales follow food sources to the coasts of Greenland, and many tours of the world's largest island feature whale-watching to observe humpback whales breaching the water's surface.

Yesterday the New South Wales Government announced that greyhound racing would be banned in New South Wales from 1 July 2017. The reason for the ban is the systemic abuse of the welfare of the dogs and other animals, notably the issues of “wastage” of greyhounds and also the widespread practice of live baiting.

I had always been an “animal lover,” growing up with dogs, cats, fish, and a horse, but my turning point really came during a bike ride. I was in high school and on a weekend bike ride with a few friends. We stopped along a fenced-in field where some cows were grazing on the other side. Out of nowhere, a small calf came trotting over to me and poked his head out between the rails. I petted him, looked into his eyes, and fed him some grass from my side of the fence, as the grass is always greener on the other side …. We finished our break and biked around the other side of the fields, and to my horror, I realized this “farm” was a slaughterhouse and that calf was being raised for meat. I was shocked. I rode home, tears streaming down my face the entire time. I knew I had to become a vegetarian, and the next week, I gave up meat and fish for good.

But, Tarra chose Bella and the feelings were quite mutual. They spent all their years eating together, playing together and sleeping together. When Bella was in the clinic with a spinal injury in 2010, Tara stood vigil outside the clinic for three weeks, rather than roam the sanctuary’s 2,700 acres. Bella was brought out to the balcony one day to at least see Tarra. She was so happy to see her companion, that it was decided they would bring her outside to be with Tarra for a short visit. Tarra took her giant elephant foot and gently pet Bella across her whole body over and over. On October 26, 2011, Bella was attacked by a coyote and died in the woods. Tarra searched and found Bella’s body. She carried her best friend back to the spot they had spent most of their time together and mourned the death of her dearest companion.
